The Missing Bak Chang (III)

The CSI team decided to call it a day after the realization that a bak chang wasn’t worth all the efforts.

It would be easy to think that the culprit would be heaving a sigh of relief when the commotion died down.

Actually this was furthest away from the truth; the culprit was supremely confident that he/she would not get caught.

He/she would not need to worry since he/she was even able to get rid of the lotus leaves used to wrap the bak chang so effortlessly.

Deep in his/her mind, the culprit was planning for something bigger and bolder next time.

A nyonya chang perhaps?

The Missing Bak Chang (II)

The CSI team failed to gather any conclusive evidence and they couldn’t pinpoint any possible suspect.

Could it be Hesa? But he’s a Muslim and therefore won’t touch the non-halal food.

How about a fish-lover? Someone may want to replicate the story of Qu Yuan in the company’s fish tank.

However one thing is for sure; the culprit is definitely a formidable character.

He/she must have planned the operation down to the most minor details and executed it with laser-like precision.

If not, how would he/she be able to leave almost no evidence behind?

The Missing Bak Chang (I)

(Inspired by true events)

The bak chang was left inside the basket; without attracting any special attention. It was HJ’s breakfast and he decided to have it only after going to the washroom.

While he was away, several others passed by the pantry. Two of them actually remembered seeing the bak chang. However when HJ returned, the basket was empty.

Who took the bak chang?

Immediately a CSI team was created to perform Operation Missing Bak Chang. Different hypotheses were circulating among those in the office.

Could it be the cleaning auntie? Nope… she hasn’t come in yet.

Did anyone check the dustbin? The dustbin is full and no bak chang is found there.

If everyone were to be present, the natural suspect would be Kevin, the office’s serial chapatti eater. However he only arrived after the discovery and therefore could not be classified as a suspect.

This has evolved to be a case of whodunit. Everyone present in the office during that timeframe is a suspect.

Anybody could be the culprit.

Holidays Thus Far

This post will start with another lament that I hasn't been blogging lately. Well.. the workplace is kinda calm and I only have another week to go before the start of my summer holidays.

Hmmm... Let's start with my work. The website is more or less up but I can foresee more changes before it can go live. Basically I've been left to work on my own; without much interference or supervision. With no background knowledge of web design prior to the attachment, somehow I'm manage to negotiate all the html and javascript and put together something decent. Really have to thank all who gave their kind assistance along the way.

My supervisor is also the boss but he's away in China until end of the week. This means that I don't know who to ask to write the report for me. Can only wait and see...

Last Friday I saw Felicia Chin at the canteen where I usually had my lunch. I know no picture no talk but was too paiseh to ask to take picture. She was fashionably dressed (those high-cut boots) and her face is really small. Her make-up was very thick too. The logical explaination was that she had some photoshoot at Mediacorp Publishing (located in the same building as the canteen).

Tempted to ask whether she has boob job; in the end some journalist already posted the answers on Lianhe Zaobao. (Who believes anyway??)

So what's going to happen after the internship ends? Well the first thing will be trying to finish the application for exchange. Some of the courses have be approved so now I need to find the time to write my study plan and get the necessary academic references.

Then there will be a trip to Hong Kong with Mom and Sis. Haven't planned anything concrete yet because I couldn't find the Hong Kong Lonely Planet in the library. Hong Kong is quite standard; 买东西,吃东西,买东西,吃东西。。。Ocean Park perhaps? Will be going to Macau as well. From the pictures Macau's architecture looks very Europrean and the Casinos there seem extravagant.

Perhaps our trip will be subsidized by Stanley Ho, Sheldon Adelson or Steve Wynn. LOL...

There may be another short trip after HK but nothing's confirmed yet. This holidays will be pretty low-key compared to the last one. F1's training will be starting in July as well although it will be only on two weekends. Quite looking forward to the event although I hasn't been an ardent F1 fan.

By the way I've also sent in the application for the YEP in India and there will be an interview on Thursday. After seeing Ho Teck & Kendrick doing two YEPs, I think that YEP will be a great experience. Somehow things seem to be falling nicely into place as they are looking with people with web design capability (something which I've been doing over the past 2 months).

King Khan

Just finished reading a book on Shahrukh Khan which also offers outsiders insight into Bollywood. Bollywood is not the real India; Indians are never big fans of realism. Who will mind a little escapism in the cinema when they have to face the real India everyday?

Splito

Although I've been thinking of this thing for quite some time, somehow I didn't manage to put them down into words.

VJC was created out of VS; hence both schools shared the same alumni association.

The million dollar question in my mind is:

Are the Victorians from VJC equivalent to the Victorians of VS?

The answer is easy if one is a VS boy who goes on to VJC.

How about VS boys who didn't go to VJ or VJC students who were not from VS?

The official answer should be: Yes, we are all Victorians.

But are we really the same?

For me the answer is obviously no.

Of course I'm biased but do let me explain.

Firstly, there are no common experiences for the 2 different sets of students. I didn't go into VJC so I don't know what the hell happened there and neither do the VJC students knew what the heck the VS boys went through. Hence I feel that it isn't fair to equate both sets of students

Secondly, the Victorian spirit is definitely stronger on the VS side. I don't think anybody can argue with this.

Thirdly, VJC seems to view VS as the poor cousin and doesn't mind a divorce since VS cannot supply it with the talents for their own program. How to equate the students if one school doesn't exactly treat the other as equal?

Almost every year there will be calls for VS to accept girls so that VJC through-train program can compete with the ACS and the Raffles' schools.

An absolute disgrace to me; VJC seems to conveniently forget the fact that it won't even exist without Victoria School. Talking about biting the hand which feed him; isn't this a wonderful example?

Should Victoria School sacrifice its years of traditions just to satisfy VJC's selfish needs? Of course not. Will VS bow to the pressure of VJC? I afraid so. However, VS will not be better off without VJC as nowadays many students actually enrolled because of the affiliation.

The pressure is not only from VJC; I have to admit that it is the whole state of the education system in Singapore which creates the situation.

My VS days were the most memorable ones; I will make the same choice if I were to do it all over again. Many of the close friends remain those I knew back in VS. I learn that there are much more beyond good academic results; the caramaderie, the culture and the spirit are unlikely to be recreated elsewhere.

Perhaps these experiences define who are true Victorians.
